Don’t Understand Democratic Engagement and How Your Vote Matters?

Why Political Engagement is Essential for Canadian Muslims

For decades, many in the Muslim community were not very politically engaged. That changed in 2015, when the Stephen Harper government introduced policies that directly targeted Muslims, from the niqab ban at citizenship ceremonies to the “barbaric cultural practices” tip line. These policies sent a clear message: if we don’t engage politically, decisions will be made about us—without us.

That election was a turning point. The Muslim community recognized the urgency of political participation and began mobilizing to protect its rights and ensure its voice was heard. This movement led to the birth of The Canadian Muslim Vote (TCMV)—a non-partisan, grassroots charitable organization dedicated to increasing civic engagement and educating Canadian Muslims about their democratic rights.

What is The Canadian Muslim Vote (TCMV)?

TCMV was founded in 2015 with a simple but powerful mission: to ensure that Canadian Muslims are politically aware, engaged, and empowered. It does not endorse political parties, lobby for policies, or promote any religious views. Instead, its work focuses on educating and encouraging Canadian Muslims to participate in elections by:

✔️ Providing non-partisan voter education resources to help Muslims understand Canada’s political system. ✔️ Hosting debates and discussions that allow community members to engage with candidates and elected officials.
✔️ Mobilizing volunteers and community leaders to encourage voter participation at the municipal, provincial, and federal levels.
✔️ Breaking down barriers to civic engagement, ensuring that politics is accessible and relevant to all Muslims in Canada.

Your Vote is Your Voice

Since 2015, Canadian Muslims have seen firsthand the power of political engagement. When we vote, we influence the policies that shape our daily lives—from education and healthcare to foreign policy and civil rights. Our participation doesn’t just impact this election; it builds a long-term foundation for political representation and advocacy.

📌 Why does this matter?

  • Decisions about immigration, security laws, and human rights are made by those in power—voting ensures that our perspectives are considered.
  • Politicians take note of communities that vote in high numbers. A politically engaged Muslim community means that our voices cannot be ignored.
  • Without representation, policies like those from 2015 can happen again.
