How Do We Hold Elected Officials Accountable?

June 3, 2025

Beyond the Ballot: Building a Culture of Accountability

The 2025 federal election was a milestone for Canadian Muslims. Through disciplined organizing, targeted endorsements, and values-driven mobilization, we made it clear that our votes must be earned—not assumed. But elections are only one piece of the puzzle. The real test begins now: holding those we helped elect accountable.

Accountability isn’t just a buzzword. It’s a political necessity. Without it, promises fade, priorities shift, and power consolidates without consequence. With it, we turn electoral gains into lasting change.

So how do we actually do it?

1. Track What They Say—and What They Do

Accountability starts with paying attention to what happens in Parliament. Elected officials make a lot of promises during campaigns. But what matters is how they vote, what policies they back, and where they show up when it counts.

CMPAC is actively monitoring:

  • Parliamentary votes related to Gaza, civil liberties, and systemic Islamophobia.
  • MPs’ public statements and media appearances.
  • Committee participation, sponsored legislation, and advocacy behind closed doors.

We’re not here to clap for slogans. We’re here to document actions.

2. Use Community Pressure—Collectively

No MP should feel like their support is secured because they won an election, especially if they abandon the values they campaigned on.

We must be loud, organized, and principled in our responses:

  • Contact your MP directly. Phone calls, emails, and in-person visits still matter.
  • Coordinate with others in your riding to demand meetings and push shared priorities.
  • Call out silence. Public accountability doesn’t require hostility—but it does require courage.

3. Mobilize During—and Between—Election Cycles

CMPAC’s MuslimsVote.ca campaign was never about one election. It was—and still is—a civic strategy.

Moving forward, we CMPAC will:

  • Publish regular MP report cards and riding updates.
  • Organize advocacy days on the Hill with community stakeholders.
  • Support Muslims working in policy, politics, and public service to become long-term institutional changemakers.

Accountability doesn’t mean waiting until the next election. It means staying active between them.

CMPAC’s Leadership in Accountability

CMPAC is building the infrastructure Canadian Muslims need to hold governments to account—through policy expertise, civic education, and legislative engagement.

Our role post-election includes:
✔️ Monitoring federal policy through a values-based lens
✔️ Amplifying grassroots concerns in Ottawa
✔️ Training and supporting the next generation of political leaders
✔️ Equipping communities with the tools to advocate effectively

What You Can Do

✔️ Stay informed. Follow CMPAC’s updates and advocacy work.
✔️ Stay involved. Join our events, campaigns, and trainings.
✔️ Stay principled. Don’t let parties take your vote for granted—demand better, every time.

We didn’t mobilize to celebrate a win. We mobilized to win dignity, justice, and lasting influence. That work is just beginning.
