Why Accountability, Not Complacency, Is the Only Path Forward
As the dust settles from the 2025 federal election, one message is clear: Canadian Muslims shaped this outcome. From doorsteps to digital platforms, from community halls to Parliament Hill, we organized, mobilized, and made our voices count.
But let’s be clear—our election strategy was not about endorsing the Liberal Party. It was about forcing accountability, and holding the balance of power.
The result? A Liberal minority government.
A Critical Moment, Not a Blank Cheque
Let’s not suffer from short-term memory loss. Since October 7th, the Liberal government has overseen one of the most shameful chapters in Canadian foreign policy—greenlighting a genocide in Gaza, shielding Israel diplomatically, and offering gestures instead of justice. Women and children were killed. Civil liberties were threatened here at home. And support for Israel became a policy.
But we also recognize that within the Liberal Party, many MPs fought hard to shift their party. We saw dozens take a stand—publicly, clearly, and consistently—against the status quo. And we stood by those candidates in this election.
At the same time, a Pierre Poilievre-led Conservative government would have been devastating. On Gaza, on civil liberties, on Islamophobia—the threat was real and tangible.
Yet a Liberal majority would have offered no better hope for Gaza. With unchecked power, it would have had no reason to compromise, no pressure to shift, and no incentive to listen.
Why a Minority Government Matters
For Canadian Muslims, this result—while imperfect—is strategic. A minority Liberal government dependent on NDP support is the only reason the motion for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza passed in the last Parliament. That motion, led by the NDP, was backed by a majority of Liberal MPs precisely because the government needed NDP cooperation to govern.
This is why a Liberal minority government is the best-case scenario for our community today—not because it is ideal, but because it is leverage.
We must continue to demand accountability:
- From a Liberal Party that still needs to earn back the community’s trust.
- From an NDP caucus that must remain consistent in its principled stance on Palestine.
- From every MP who campaigned on justice, human rights, and the rule of law.
CMPAC’s Role Moving Forward
CMPAC’s MuslimsVote.ca campaign was never about one election. It was about a strategy—rooted in principle, designed for accountability, and built to last. Our work continues with:
- Monitoring MPs’ votes and public positions on Gaza, Islamophobia, and civil liberties.
- Publishing updates for the community.
- Organizing advocacy days and national conversations.
- Training the next generation of Muslim civic leaders.
No More Fear-Based Politics
We are done voting out of fear. We are done being used as a silent electorate. And we are done rewarding parties that ignore our values. A Liberal majority can only happen when this party earns it—through action, not promises.
This election was not just a political event. It was a referendum on dignity, justice, and organized Muslim power in Canada.
We will not step back.
We will not be sidelined.
We are just getting started.
